Training Unit
The Training Unit is responsible for developing, coordinating, and delivering comprehensive training programs that ensure all sworn and civilian personnel of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office are equipped to perform their duties safely, effectively, and in accordance with state and national standards.
The unit oversees initial training for new hires, continuing education for certified deputies, and specialized instruction that supports operational readiness across all divisions.

Maintain Certification & ComplianceEnsures all deputies meet Alabama Peace Officers’ Standards and Training Commission (APOSTC) requirements and tracks mandatory annual training hours, certifications, and renewals.
In-Service TrainingPlans and conducts ongoing professional development including firearms qualifications, defensive tactics, legal updates, emergency vehicle operations, de-escalation, crisis intervention, and other essential law-enforcement skills.
Academy & On-boardingCoordinates with regional academies and manages internal orientation programs for new personnel, ensuring they are fully prepared for field assignments.
Specialized TrainingSupports advanced instruction such as leadership development, instructor certification courses, tactical training, use-of-force instruction, communications, and scenario-based learning.
Policy & Standards SupportAssists in developing training that aligns with agency policies, industry best practices, and emerging public safety trends.
Community EngagementFacilitates community-focused programs (e.g., self-defense & basic handgun classes).
Mission
The mission of the Training Unit is to enhance the professionalism, readiness, and effectiveness of the Sheriff’s Office through high-quality, relevant, and progressive training. By investing in continuous development, the unit ensures deputies are prepared to serve the community with competence, integrity, and confidence.
Leadership
The Training Unit is under the direction of Chief Deputy Jeff Pitts, Lieutenant Jessica Daley, and Deputy Terry Breaux. The Sheriff’s Office has several in-house instructors assigned to various divisions that are called upon as needed.
