Voting is a very important right that we have as Americans. Below you will find information to prepare yourself for the next election.
The information on this page comes from the Alabama Secretary of State or other official sources, as noted. We encourage you to stay informed about upcoming elections and know your rights and responsibilities as a voter.
Important Dates for the 2026 Election Year
All of the information in this section is copied directly from the Alabama 2026 Voter Guide.
May 19 - Primary Election
- May 4 - Voter registration deadline
- May 12 - Last day to apply for an absentee ballot to mail
- May 14 - Last day to apply for an absentee ballot in person
- May 18 - Last day to hand-deliver absentee ballot
- May 19 - Absentee ballots returned by mail must be received by noon (Except for persons casting absentee ballots pursuant to the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act voters.)
June 16 - Primary Runoff Election (If Necessary)
- May 29 - Last day to hand-deliver voter registration
- June 1 - Last day to postmark voter registration forms & register electronically
- June 9 - Last day to apply for an absentee ballot to mail
- June 11 - Last day to apply for an absentee ballot in person
- June 15 - Last day to hand-deliver absentee ballot
- June 16 - Absentee ballots returned by mail must be received by noon (Except for persons casting absentee ballots pursuant to the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act voters.)
November 3 - General Election
- October 19 - Voter registration deadline
- October 27 - Last day to apply for an absentee ballot by mail
- October 29 - Last day to apply for an absentee ballot in person
- November 2 - Last day to hand-deliver an absentee ballot
- November 3 - Absentee ballots returned by mail must be received by noon (Except for persons casting absentee ballots pursuant to the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act voters.)
Check Your Voter Registration Status & Polling Place
By searching your name and birth date, you can check to be sure that you are registered. You can also enter your address to find out where your polling station is for upcoming elections on the Secretary of State’s Voter View page.
Register to Vote/Update Your Voter Information
There are lots of ways to register to vote & to update your registration, which can be done online, in-person, or by mail.
- Online - visit sos.alabama.gov/alabama-votes
- Mailing a printed voter registration from from the Secretary of State’s website & mailing it to the local Board of Registrars Office (In Lee County, that office is located at 205 S. 10th St., Opelika, AL 36801 - inside the Bennie Adkins Meeting Center)
- When you’re applying for/updating an Alabama driver’s license
- When you’re applying to re-certifying SNAP, TANF, Food Stamps, WIC, Medicaid, Aid to Dependent Children, or Rehabilitation Service
- At armed forces recruiting stations
- At the Board of Registrars Office (In Lee County, that office is located at 205 S. 10th St., Opelika, AL 36801 - inside the Bennie Adkins Meeting Center)
- Via mail-in form that is available at the Probate Office, License Commissioner Office, and many other locations
- By contacting the Elections Division at 1-800-274-VOTE (8363), to request a mail-in form be mailed to you and then mailing the completed form to the local Board of Registrars Office (In Lee County, that office is located at 205 S. 10th St., Opelika, AL 36801 - inside the Bennie Adkins Meeting Center)
Voter Registration Requirements
Registration Requirements - Any person may register to vote, provided they:
- are a citizen of the United States;
- live in Alabama;
- are at least 18 years old on or before election day;
- are not barred from voting due to a disqualifying felony conviction; and
- have not been declared mentally incompetent by a court.
You may register to vote the same day that you move into the state of Alabama. Voter registration is open year-round except during the 14 days prior to an election and on election day. If you are registering to vote by mail-in form, the registration must be postmarked no later than the registration deadline for an election. If you are registering to vote in-person, your registration must be received by the close of business on the date of the registration deadline. If you are registering to vote electronically, your registration must be submitted by 11:59pm on the date of the registration deadline.
Domestic Violence Voter Information
If you are a survivor of domestic violence, have a minor in your care who is a survivor of domestic violence, or a domestic violence order has been issued to restrain access to yourself or a minor in your custody, you are eligible to have you residential and mailing addresses omitted from publicly available lists of registered voters.
The Alabama Secretary of State’s website has a Domestic Violence Affirmation Form that you can fill out and return to the Board of Registrars office in the county where you are registered to vote. In Lee County, that office is located at 205 S. 10th St., Opelika, AL 36801 (inside the Bennie Adkins Meeting Center).
